What is Wi-Fi and How Wi-Fi technology works?

A complete guide about Wi-Fi, know about the technology, working methodology, classes, mechanism and all.

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is a popular wireless networking technology developed for providing high-speed internet access and network connections to computers or devices which supports Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi was developed by Wi-Fi Alliance an organization who owns the rights and patents of Wi-Fi technology, Wi-Fi is a registered trademark of Wi-Fi Alliance and they technically defined Wi-Fi a network protocol (WLAN - Wireless Local Area Network) based on IEEE 802.11 network standards.

You can see many devices using Wi-Fi like Laptops, Personal Computers, Smartphones, Televisions, and GPS Navigators etc. Nowadays, Wi-Fi is the most accepted way of communicating data wirelessly; it's fast and connects to multiple devices at a time.

Wi-Fi

Fact: - Do you know how and where the name Wi-Fi arrives? The term Wi-Fi was created accidentally which is Hi-Fi (High Fidelity) originally. But Wi-Fi Alliance named it Wi-Fi, due to their slogan of "the standard for wireless fidelity".

How Wi-Fi technology works?

Everybody is using Wi-Fi technology today and so many people want to know "how Wi-Fi technology works"? Here we are going to unlock everything behind this innovative technology.
Wi-Fi is a wireless networking protocol and it uses Radio Waves to provide high speed network or Internet connections. Wi-Fi uses radio frequency technology to establish a high speed connection between sender and receiver.

Radio Frequency (RF) is a frequency that creates electromagnetic waves when RF current passes through an antenna, and then an electromagnetic field is created with a limited range or frequency. Wi-Fi has several network bands and frequencies that can provide you the speed of network access from 2.4 GHz to 5.0 GHz according to their class of Wi-Fi certification. But speed varies on several things like signal strength, range, amount of data, speed of your ISP etc.

Basically it uses from 802.11b standard to transmit data or network signals but now we can see various frequency standards of Wi-Fi, like 802.11a, 802.11b and Dual Band and so on for faster data transmission speed.

Wi-Fi Alliance

Wi-Fi mainly relies on Access Point (AP) to work; we can say AP is the backbone of wireless network transmission. The main task of AP is to collect and decode the wireless signals and let computers or other devices to detect and receive the Wi-Fi signals. To connect to a Wi-Fi Access Point, your device must be supportive or equipped with Wireless Network adapters and have all the necessary software or hardware related components.

What Wi-Fi can do?

Wi-Fi is useful to do so many tasks without any hassle, it's fast, stable and you don't have to worry about the tangled cables, because, it's wireless.

Most people think Wi-Fi only used for internet connections, but Wi-Fi is not only restricted to Internet connections sharing, it can do a lot, here is some tasks that Wi-Fi technology can do for you: -
  • Can transmit data signals for internet connectivity.
  • Can send or receive information or data from 2 or more sources (between 2 PC's, Smartphones etc.)
  • Can be used as a router to share internet with other devices through Wi-Fi hotspot technology.
  • Used by consumer electronics devices for connect, send or receive information.
  • Can send or receive files or data through Wi-Fi direct feature.
What you need to create or use a Wi-Fi network?
  • A Wi-Fi certified/supported device.
  • An internet connection.
  • A wireless router.
  • Configure the SSID.
  • Set username and password.
  • Choose a security WEP, WPA or either free.

Follow the instructions of your ISP to configure or setup your Wi-Fi connection or also read the manuals or instructions of your components (modem, routers etc.) while configuring or using Wi-Fi.
